Indore, September 7, 2025: The National Automotive Test Tracks (NATRAX) has partnered with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to develop an intelligent toll system that will automatically deduct toll fees from moving vehicles.
The planned system, announced at the Sustainable Mobility Conclave 2025 in Indore, will eliminate the need for vehicles to stop at toll plazas. It is expected to improve traffic flow, shorten commute times, and reduce emissions through real-time toll collection.
According to officials, the system will rely on advanced sensors and intelligent transport technologies to detect vehicles and enable seamless toll deductions. NHAI will oversee phased implementation across national highways.
Dr. Manish Jaiswal, Director, NATRAX, said Currently, drivers must halt their vehicles to pay tolls. With our new system, toll fees will be deducted while vehicles are in motion. This innovation will redefine highway travel, making it more efficient, eco-friendly, and convenient for millions of commuters nationwide.”
The project is being supervised by the National Automotive Board (NAB) under the Ministry of Heavy Industries. While NATRAX will certify emerging technologies, NHAI will manage nationwide deployment.
Officials said the initiative aligns with India’s broader sustainability goals, tackling global challenges of carbon emissions, plastic pollution, and electronic waste.
The announcement came during the Sustainable Mobility Conclave, where stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and mobility services discussed strategies for circular economy adoption, end-of-life vehicle management, and traffic innovations.
The intelligent tolling project is positioned as a key step in modernising India’s highway network and supporting the country’s transition towards sustainable and technology-driven mobility.
